Gateway to Hell?

Forty years ago, in 1971, Soviet geologists created a giant crater after an alleged drill for natural gas in the interior of the earth. Concerned about poisonous gas fumes, lit with fire the hole waiting to be burned within a few hours. Now, forty years later, the crater is still burning and is known as the "Gateway to Hell."

Darvaza, Karakum Desert, Turkmenistan

Gate to Hell

In the heart of the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan Gas Crater Darvaza, emits a light that can be seen from miles away during the dark nights.

The large crater is the result of an accident gas exploration occurred in 1971. It was created in a Soviet drilling rig fell into an underground cavern that now measures approximately 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep. The huge crater was set alight shortly after being discovered and has been burning ever since. The smell of burning sulfur can be detected from afar and is stronger the closer.

Theories

There have been many theories about how this crater appeared. Although official reports indicated that the geologists had been the cause, like the mysterious explosion of Tunguska , one of the major conspiracy theories would be that the local government said the crater was caused by a meteorite impact and the strange fire was caused by some kind of alien gas. In addition, the city name or Darvaza Derweze in Turkmen means "the Gate", which should be remembered that the city dates back to before the drilling accident in 1971. But Darvaza gas crater is not the only worldwide such phenomenon, according to some has a direct link to Centralia in Pennsylvania, the city is burning from the inside out.

Centralia, the other door to hell

Centralia, today a ghost town because of an alleged mine accident. This accident caused a fire that still burns underground and has led to the complete evacuation of all residents.

According to recent research, in May 1962, the City Council of Centralia hired five members of the volunteer fire company to clean the city dump, located in an abandoned mine. This had been done in previous years, but this time the dump was in a different location. The fire, set fire to the landfill and waited for the burn. Unlike previous years, the fire is not quenched.

The fire kept burning underground and spread through the abandoned coal mines beneath Centralia. Attempts to extinguish the fire proved futile, and continued burning for the years 1960 and 1970. Nobody knows how long will the fire burning, but estimated at least another 250 years.

Theories

Witnesses said the fire was burning long before the fire burned away, this led to many theories, just as happened with the gas Darvaza Crater, one of the theories have in common is that they tell something types of doors to the unknown. Centralia inspired the popular video game "Silent Hill" which later became a movie with the same name that shows access to another world.

Treated or not access doors to the unknown, the mystery hanging over this kind of strange events, as there are many more worldwide. There are many theories about what may be happening, but the reality is that these places continue to burn fires will go out not knowing when or what it was that it originates. What better weapon fire to scare away animals.
