Forty years ago, in 1971, Soviet geologists created a giant crater after an alleged drill for natural gas in the interior of the earth. Concerned about poisonous gas fumes, lit with fire the hole waiting to be burned within a few hours. Now, forty years later , the crater is still burning and is known as the "Gateway to Hell." Gate to Hell In the heart of the Karakum Desert of Turkmenistan Gas Crater Darvaza, emits a light that can be seen from miles away during the dark nights. The large crater is the result of an accident gas exploration occurred in 1971. It was created in a Soviet drilling rig fell into an underground cavern that now measures approximately 60 meters in diameter and 20 meters deep.
