The Ghosts of Pluckley Village

The globe is stuffed with strange and unknowable things. Ghosts and goblins, the walking dead...where ever you look there's plenty of it around to understand more about.

Pluckley Village, in Kent, is said to be the most haunted village in the UK. Over the years, many kinds of spirits have been seen by both locals and tourists.

The ghost of an old gypsy, wrapped in a shawl and smoking a pipe, has often been spotted standing near a bridge. The shattered remains of an old oak tree, situated nearby, is a noted haunt for the apparition of a murdered highwayman. In life, the highwayman was said to have been killed by a sword, and it was this weapon that impaled him to the tree.

There are many buildings in Pluckley Village which are also reputed to be haunted. For instance, in the Church of Saint Nicholas, the spirit of Lady Dering - who was buried in three lead coffins to prevent her decay - occasionally manifests itself. She has been seen walking through the churchyard at night with the red rose, with which she was buried, unwithered on her breast. In the Dering Chapel, mysterious lights have been seen through its windows, and the disembodied voice of a woman has been heard in the churchyard. The spirit of a long-dead monk is said to haunt a house called Greystones, and the voice of a former owner of another house, Rose Court, has often been heard there as she calls her dogs. Also, the old mill is haunted by the ghost of a miller, who is said to be in constant search of his lost love during the nocturnal hours. In the Dering Arms public house, a spectral woman dressed in Victorian clothing hangs around the bar. In another pub, The Black Horse, a spectral hand moves items across the bar, tidies up, and occasionally hides coats and wallets. A ghostly carriage, pulled by two horses, has often been seen trotting down the main public street of Pluckley. The origin of this carriage is unknown.

But the most terrifying of all the entities said to haunt Pluckley Village has to be that of the so-called "Screaming Ghost". The blood curdling screams of this ghost have been heard in the area around the Brickworks, Pluckley Heath.
